First Generation Program
First Generation Program Mission:
The mission of The First Generation Program is to help students successfully transition into, make progress in, and ultimately graduate from college by providing specialized and targeted student support in response to student needs which, in addition to existing University of Central Florida resources, will Inspire intellectual, cultural and social growth among all First Generation College students.
Program Overview
Students are expected to participate in at least two workshops per semester. These workshops are designed to provide timely, relevant, and useful information to students. Students are expected to meet with their advisor at least two times per term for advising through their first year, however, many students meet with their advisor more frequently if they are facing academic difficulties, have trouble adjusting to college life, need assistance in applying for scholarships or just need to ‘connect.’
Student Services
MASS Peer Mentors are successful upper-class students at UCF and are available to provide students with insight into classes, the college experience or just to talk. MASS Peer Mentors undergo a rigorous and selective evaluation and interview process to be able to provide our MASS students with the best in mentoring services. From peer developed workshops to social events designed for students to connect in a safe environment, our MASS Peer Mentors have insight to student issues and are open and available for MASS students to connect with. Students are regularly connected to scholarships and are given many opportunities to connect with faculty and staff as mentors who will facilitate in the process.
Workshops
“LIFE Skills” Series
Our popular “LIFE Skills” series introduces students to emerging concepts of the college experience such as Money Management and College Etiquette and Roommate Issues. These workshops are developed by students for students providing opportunities to connect with successful students who have and can provide guidance through the college experience.
“The Next Level”
We not only expect our students to survive their first year as undergraduates, we expect them to thrive and reach beyond the university experience. Our students are regularly connected with internship opportunities with local and national programs. Students are offered many opportunities to explore the future and their goals. Whether a student’s goals include going straight into the workforce, attending graduate school or a professional school (Medical or Law), our “MASS Graduate School Week” provides students access to all the information and resources they will require to achieve their goals.
